A good way to start is get a domain name, hosting, and probably install a blog (wordpress), and start writing what you interest about. Once you have do it long enough and have a steady stream of visitors/readers, start monetizing from
them (using adsense or other alternative).

Thanks limcs. I've been blogging for years but I've only just recently thought about making money out of the web. I do know it will take quite some time to develop a readership that can provide a nice, sustainable income - it's something that will take time (judging from the hotshots like alang and lcf).
I've done a bit of research into blogging CMS and I think that I'll go with either Textpattern or NucleusCMS.
Opensourcecms.com/ seems to provide excellent information, plus they even have demoes of the systems.
And yes, I think starting out with adsense seems to be a good idea - it's easy to setup and I've already tried it on one of my blogs.
The next thing I need to look into is SEO and promotion of my site.
