They need to take that risk otherwise they will not learn anything. your advice for them to build content website is good, but as you know it will take years for traffic to come and some income to get. When traffic is good and they enjoying great income, suddenly search engine alter their algorithm and all traffic is gone, what happen to their income, from hero to zero. Pity on them. I know, i've been through this.

They start finding another way to get that income back. They start buying whole of bullshit making money ebook and still they cannot making any dollar from that ebooks. So what your advice to them? Still concentrate on that type of website?

Why not they learn new ways of making money from internet.

for example:
- collect lead and sell it
- build list and promote affiliate program to that list (Clickbank)
- promote cpa networks, maybe ringtone
- bum marketing
- 5 to 10 pages mini website promoting adsense, a lot of them maybe 100 mini website that inter connect with each other (virtual real estate)
- incentive website
- freebies website
- ecommerce website using dropshipping
- ecommerce website using datafeed
- sell crappy ebooks
- membership website
- ebay
- adsense arbitrage/chitika arbitrage
- sell services like landing page design, blog template design

What newbie want to know which type of money making website they should concentrate and get consistent income from that. They do not worry about their traffic, whether their ranking is good or not in search engine. Even 100 visitors per day is enough if they can get good income from that traffic.
