Because each of everything tend to be catchy and need attention, in the end came out with striking colors and eventually spoil the website's design..
Successful ecommerce store, basically does a few things right.

The website is optimized, meaning search engine friendly, and they describe the web pages in a way that the GYM (Google, Yahoo, MSN) can easily understand and properly index it.

2ndly, they have bunch of incoming and outcoming links to relevant content or industry or forum or blog etc.

Just remember one thing, don't simply buy link in spammy link sites, RAQ (Relevancy, Authority, Quality) matters. link building takes time, be patient. persistence is the key.

Then their website must communicate TRUST, there are few ways that you can build high trust.

Building Trust via Web Design
not necessarily must be pretty. but their targeted customer must like and feel comfortable with it. if you sell more generic items aka like a supermarket, then you might adopt even simpler design to suit a broad base of taste. Then if you sell baby products, then you bet your site must appear to be cute and liked by all the young parents esp the mother!

Building Trust via Payment Type
The payment type they support also must communicate TRUST, how so? If you target, let's say UK, do you think they know what is Maybank2u? Use something that's recognized worldwide, eg paypal, worldpay, protx (uk) or whatever that is well known in that particular country.

Building Trust by being Personal (aka Human Touch?)
Imagine having your other side of business seen. Dell also blog. Nothing can do this better than blogging about your business, your team and your merchandize! So, start blogging now!

Building Trust via SSL and 3rd Party Certification
Online consumers now are more security savvy than ever, you want a piece of their business? Buy a SSL for your website. or subscribe to 3rd party trusted site seal like..

Better Business Bureau (US)
Commerce Trust (Singapore)

Malaysia ada site seal?? haven't heard of any yet, pai seh.

Buiding Trust via Your Business Policy
Privacy Policy? Return Policy? Terms of Use? Shipping details, Expose out as many details as possible. And of course, not forgetting each time you have a genuine enquiry, reply fast.
