Not everyone has expertise in everything. That is what sharing is all about.
Many years ago, there was a push for technology transfer. That is how Proton started off with Japanese involvement. Why can't Proton tie up with overseas companies doing such new innovations as it will benefit us all in the long run.
Companies like Petronas have more than enough funds to participate in such technology. They seem to have lots of money to sponsor F1 team. Those race cars uses fuel and go round in circles. I think they are working on some new type of engine, bio-diesel or something? But something like a hybrid or air-powered engine may be more useful to us all.
