How many visitors actually visited at the time that caused overload? What's meant by "large" number of hits? How many hits at the time of overload?
Their recent price increase ..sweetened by storage / bandwidth increase is also meaningless going by these cases.

Maybe u should hardcode your links... the menubar.......... and also the categories at the sidebar (and don't show number of posts within categories) ....... should help in reducing queries
