Unethical or irresposible domain name reseller practice?

I'm not sure if this topic is right to be put here.
Here's the e-mail that I received on night July 14th, I'm very unsatisfied:

Quote:
Dear Customers,

We are regret to inform you that one of our Domain Registrar decided to cease its Domain Registrar operations and shall not providing support to it domain name in future. The Registrar will cease all domains operations by 01/08/2008, beyond you wonĄŻt even able to manage your existing Domains under Xxx.com

We are now at an arrangement to transfer all affected domain names to our another Registrar at Xxx.com and Xxx.com. All affected domain name is advisable to transfer for renew to avoid lost of domain name after 01/08/2008. However, it is not compulsory for you to transfer and renew the domain name. All affected domain name is still accessible until its expiry date, but it is not manageable after 01/08/2008 including NOT able to change contact info, update name server, transfer and renew.

The pricing for transfer is RM35 per domain name (Include 1 year renewal).

You still is the owner of the domain name and manage under XXX after the transfer/renew.

I'm not going into their Terms & conds. But let's bear in mind that I and maybe some of other domain name owners out there that paid for their domain name to this company.

The Question are:
i. Is it ethical for this company to charge another sum of money to the domain name owner to retain and have control(I mean after the 1 year contract) over their domain name? What if the statement of Domain Registrar to cease operation is NOT true, just a gimmick....Hmmm, I wonder how much they'll profit

ii. It seems that this company is passing-down the RESPONSIBILITY cost of maintaining their client accounts. We have already paid RM35 for each domain during the registration and that should be it-no less or more for 12 months. Although this action is trigger by the Domain Name Registrar(if it's true), the cost of Force-transfer should be bared either by the registrar of reseller it selves. In this case, the domain owner is force to either transfer/renew or else loose the ownership after the end of 12-months period.

iii. I already bought 3 domain names under this company...RM35 X 3 = RM105...F**cK**g ****.. That's the cost I have to paid within this 2 weeks if I were to continue to use their service.. Luckily I already have Godaddy account to which I'll transfer there..USD 7.19 X 3 = USD 21.57 ~ RM69.02(1USD=RM3.2) roughly. But how about the fate of other domain name owner who doesn't have that kind of money in the middle or end of the month a.k.a POKAI?

It's obvious risk of doing the business with local company. Is this kind of pay-back after we support them to grow all this long by using their service? I have the option of buying from GoDaddy since it cheaper but then still opt for local...If only 1 domain name is OK..How about those who bought more than 5 for sake of internet investment...Come on la brother, this is not stock market where you have to pump more money to maintain your stock value.

Here's some action you should do if you're affected by the company practice:

i. Do not go to pay/transfer/use this company services..Transfer your domain name to other company as long it's not this company.
ii. I already planned to buy new domain name in the coming so called Merdeka promotion Sales but then the money has to be used for transfer purpose..Arrrgh..Next time, go directly to Registrar

*this company -if you're affected, then you know which company it is.

If you have opinion on the action of this company or have similar experience, please do share it here.

Hi! I think you can leave your domain name there. The domain is still working until its expired date as long u did not change your dns server or anything, but you must obtain the Authorization Codes or Auth Codes for all domain before you cannot access the domain control panel. When you have the Auth Codes you can transfer your domain to any domain name service provider you like before the expired date of the domain name.

If you transfer before the expired date (refer ICANN rules) the domain will be renew for another 1 year. Mean you just choose which provider you want the domain to be and pay for for renewal fee for the next renewal date. Lets say the domain expired in 2/8/2008 you just pay the fee for transfer/renewal (depend or registrar) and the expired date will be extended to 2/08/2009.

I'd been thinking of your option before since I also familiar with domain name transfer and renewable policy..What intrigue me also is the phrase;

Quote:
All affected domain name is still accessible until its expiry date, but it is not manageable after 01/08/2008 including NOT able to change contact info, update name server, transfer and renew.
Not manageable including renew? Does that mean they want to push the users by taking their right by mean of not providing the AC or EPP to renew/transfer the account or just their own marketing strategy?

I hope this is not a scam or something. I have heard of emails being sent to domain owners saying that their domain is going to expire and they must renew it. But the email is not from the hosting company the customer bought it from. Some customers don't know all this and just go ahead and renew. The new hosting company then gets the domain transfered to them.

You should always register a domain with an ICAN approved registrar.

When you do a whois on the domain, what is the registrar? Not the hosting company, the domain registrar?

This sounds as if you have purchased the domain from a company who has used another company to register the domain. That second company may be the one that is having the problem.
As BasicCX said, if you transfer / renew, the domain expiry date will be extended by 1 year.

Here's another new email I got and they've include new FAQ's inside it:

Quote:
Frequency Ask Question:
1.I just renew my domain name on April 2008 and it expired on April 2009, then do I need to renew it again? Yes. If your domain name is affected, then you have to renew it to transfer it out to other registrar. After the renewal, your domain name expiry date will extend from April 2009 to April 2010.

2.Do I still able to view my website if I not renew after 01/08/2008?
Yes. Your website is still accessible until the domain name expired. But after the expired date, we are afraid that you unable to renew your domain name due to it under a closed Domain Registrar and it are unmanageable.

3.What happen to my domain name after 01/08/2008?
After the Registrar cease their domain operation, all domain name control panel might not accessible and your domain name will become unmanageable like unable to change domain contact, update name server, renew and etc.

4.If I donĄŻt plan to keep my domain name, so I can just ignore this issue?
Yes. If you donĄŻt want to keep your domain name on next year, then you can ignore this issue and you still can use your domain name until it expired.
-The company is Cynetstudio[dot]com

-This is the first time I heard the company is closing down and taking no responsibility to support the cost of 2 weeks notice transfer...This is the registrant info I got from the who is domain name:
Current Registrar: ABOUT DOMAIN DOT COM SOLUTIONS PVT. LTD.

-Like I said, I don't mind paying for my own domains. But this might open our eyes for the possibility of untransparent business practice. Some domain owner out there might find it difficult to cope up with the 2 weeks notice

-mylinear is right, we should rely more to an approved ICAN Registrar.

This seems to still be functioning, a registrar based in India.

You should contact the company and find out more details. Is Cynetstudio closing down? Or are they saying About Domain is closing down?

If Cynetstudio has registered the domains directly with About Domains, then they should have some sort of control panel to manage the domains which they may be able to pass on to existing clients. But if they have registered the domains through another party, and that party registered the domains with About Domains, then it is that other party that may be having the control panel access. And if that other party is the one closing down, then Cynetstudio may not have access anymore.

This is another problem of having many many level of people handling one thing. It has become too easy these days to become a reseller of a reseller of a reseller etc for many items.

You're lucky to have the time bail out.
I got stuck with Registerfly last year, and had to pay USD160 to bail it out because it went into redemption period, since I was not able to renew with Registerfly, and took me so long to get my authorisation code out, and had to get ICANN to help out.

Cynet's domain registrar (whom is an ICANN registrar) is not responding, so they had filed a complaint to ICANN and had to move all domains to another registrar to ensure all domains are renewable.
