Question Subdomain registration

Greetings,

I've been wondering... how do you register/configure a SUBdomain? For example, Yahoo has all these MAIL.yahoo.com, GROUPS.yahoo.com, etc. Is it done by the domain registrar, or is it user configurable? If the latter, is it easy/hard to do so.

Can anyone please suggest some providers that do support this, since my searches didn't turn up any (or I wasn't looking at the right direction).

Any advice is most welcome.

TIA
uncleJIM

Hi,

You do not need to register the subdomain. You just need to configure your dns server. How to go about doing that, depends on your domain name provider or your hosting provider if they are the ones providing the dns service.

Do you know of any Malaysia-based provider that supports subdomain registration/hosting?

Thanks.

You want a subdomain of a domain you currently own or you want a subdomain of a domain owned by a third party or are you looking for a new domain + subdomain?

you can also use

http://www.composing.biz

they have good names ending with .biz no ads too.
this is url redirection. the service is similar too thesubdomain.com

If you have your own server you can edit http.conf
for apache webserver to enable subdomain hosting. Maybe you can talk to your web host provider about it

You can host your subdomain outside of your current provider if you have managed dns service from your domain registrar. this can be done by using A entry method and you able to host your subdomain with different web hosts or in dispersed locations.

Another option is to submit a support ticket to your current web host provider (if you do not have managed dns) by editing your dns file and point to the ip address where your subdomain is hosted. hope that helps.

have a nice day..

Thanks all for the replies.

I'm actually shopping around to find a host provider that supports subdomain registration (and a Domain, too). So, apparently redirection is not the answer. In other words, let's say I'm getting a www.mynewdomain.com.my and later on I want to have shop.mynewdomain.com.my or some thing like that.

My line of question was actually to know whether it's an easy process from my side, if I don't host the server. Please keep in mind that I'm not a pro webmaster (hah, obviously ) So I need to have an early understanding of the structure, pricing, file transfer, etc.

Maybe you guys can suggest where I should look for this info. Thanks again.

Some host do provide such a service. I have a friend that might be able to help. I'll pm his contact to you. You can contact him personally. Tell him grren_bean sent you (maybe he'll give you special treatment, but no guarantees ). If my past experience is anything to go by, this guy is tops.

oh if that is the case.. any hosts could do that.. any control panel especially cpanel can create your subdmoin (in fact as many as you want) in your own cpanel.

I believe most of the provider will allow you to have a few subdomains, just try to shop around.
