    domain.my Registration

    WARNING: Endless questions ahead.

Someone please enlighten me. This is somewhat related to my previous post.

I am reading "Choosing a Domain Name" by MYNIC. Under the first headline Top-Level Domain:

MYNIC does not register other forms of domain names such as:
    www.abc.com.my
    abc.bcd.com.my
    abc.my
Immediately below, under Second-level domain it says that one of the domains available for registration is com.my.

Question No. 1: What's the difference between www.abc.com.my and abc.com.my?

Question No. 2: If MYNIC doesn't register abc.my, then how do websites like www.jaring.my and www.utm.my come into being?

Question No. 3: If MYNIC doesn't register abc.bcd.com.my, how come there is camera.canon.com.my?

Question No. 4: (Probably should be Q No.1) Is there any other .my registrar besides MYNIC?

Question No. 5: How do I, if at all possible, register my own .my domain (e.g. www.unclejim.my)?

At first glance, I thought the new name.my domain is the answer to this. It actually means something like unclejim.name.my. So...

Question No. 6: What is the marketability of name.my? I don't find it attractive at all. Ok, it's for personal use but I wonder who will sign up for this.

If the answer to these questions is "well, MYNIC can choose what and who they want to register as they please" then my response is... oh, well.
Question No. 7: What's the meaning of life?

Before I answer your questions, I recommend you to understand how domain name works and the different level of domain name.

    Read: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/dns.htm

Q1. basically, the "www" just an alias of abc.com.my. You can have http://ww2.abc.com.my, if you want.
    Refer: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question180.htm

Q2. Previously, MYNIC allow register .my domain(abc.my) but later MYNIC does not accept new registeration.

Q3. the "abc" from "abc.bcd.com.my" is the subdomain that created by YOU(owner) after registered "bcd.com.my". You can have as many subdomain you want, don't need register.

Q4. MYNIC is the one and only one who control .my domain name. You may register .my domain name from MYNIC reseller or other web hosting provider.

Q5. Impossible. Refer to Q2. answer.

Q6. neither I find it attractive.

Q7. well, we must have some rules to make sure things do not easily mess up. that's life.

Just to sum this up, for the benefits of others:

MYNIC does not register other forms of domain names such as:
www.abc.com.my - because you can do it by your own via IP mapping
    abc.bcd.com.my - same as above
abc.my - because MYNIC doesn't let you do it

    Is that about right?

During the brief course of my research for the above, I found only a handful of sites employing the domain.my address:
    www.ukm.my
    www.usm.my
    www.unimas.my
    www.sirim.my
    www.mardi.my
    www.jpm.my - Jabatan Perdana Menteri?
    www.moa.my - Ministry of Agriculture
    www.pnm.my - Perpustakaan Negara
    www.gov.my - MyGovernment

I seemed to detect a pattern there, namely IPTA and govt bodies. However, other uni's are still using the traditional edu.my TLDs (e.g. www.um.edu.my) . Probably just a matter of time.

    I prefer .com.my

Do you type jaring.com.my or jaring.my?

The ease to remember the domain solely depends on how you are being exposed to the domain.

    Thanks.

.my is such an attractive domain, like .to (Tonga), .by (Belarus), .is (Iceland) and others.

MYNIC can make big profits by opening up, IMHO.

Very very long ago.. But I think mynic phobit abc.my registration unless you are somehow huge corporate/university/government etc.. I remembered unimas.my site launch banner in year 1996/7

Why don't mynic offer .my tender.. but that won't be fair for small rat like us. Big companies would put dozens for it.. but it will really push our domain registration, web design & hostng industry up. Most of SME in malaysia are still nuts about corporate precense. Would that sounds good?
