i've only tried CubeCart, OS Commerce, and Zen Cart before. IMO, it's easier to make a custom template for OS Commerce.

It's hard to find any free OS Commerce Template. But it's easy to build it your own using the template system.

Here's a great article on how to build an OS Commerce site:

I use CpCommerce .. it's quite good. But no ready made templates .. you need to know HTML stuff to redesign the front end and PHP to modify to your requirements.

Two sites I made using CpCommerce as the engine:
http://www.excel-extools.com/catherine
http://www.excel-extools.com/hsys

Note: They're both completely functioning but not released yet. The products are just for demo.

I install and have users of all except the Interchange.

I prefer AgoraCart for several reasons. First, it does not require an outside program to import and export the database. Second, it has 5 user fields that you can use for anything you wish. I usually use one for a "Retail Price" when someone is selling at a discount.

It also has an affiliate option, if you are going to use affiliates to sell your products.

You can also use them for other purposes. It also has a better Option system, if you have color / size / etc. choices for your products.

One drawback is it does not store customer data. There is no customer file within the cart, but you can set one up on your PC when you do the billing. etc.

CubeCart is pretty basic. A lot of people start there, but find that it does not suit their needs for long. Easy to set up, with a limited number of items to sell, you can have a cart selling in a day.

OSC, Zen, CRE Loaded and OSCMax are all pretty similar. They are all almost free. CRE Loaded and OSCMax are OSC with a number of modifications already installed. CRE Loaded has begun to add Google ads to their free version, so you are making money for CRE when selling. And, of course, with Adsense, you will be advertsing for your competition.

OSCMax is my choice for the OSC type cart. It has a lot of mods already installed and it also has the import export stuff built into the menu.

As far as the "looks", keep in mind that while the design can play a part, most people go to shopping carts to get information about products they are interested in, not to judge the site design. If you have good products, at fair prices, the template is not a major concern to most people.

You can find free and inexpensive templates for all of them. Don't let the template by the deciding factor. Pick a cart by the features it has that you need, the design can always be changed.

A couple of AgoraCart sites -

A1 Wholesaler - A wholesale dropshipper site Redoing images, if some do not come up

Melchris Gifts - an online gift store

Note the similar templates. There are about 18 different colors available in that same basic design.

Small Business Hoster - We Specialize in E-commerce for Small Businesses

Thank you for your brief elaboration about your experience on the major shopping cart.

I've seen agoracart. However, the 90s look of the interface seems to drive me away.

I would prefer Virtuemart ( http://virtuemart.net/ )

I don't see a lot of difference between the Melchris Gifts site and the Virtue Mart site in looks. Both have a header, two columns on the sides and a center "sales area".

The Agora can be cusomized in any number of ways, including adding backgrounds to any or all sections, wider borders, etc. And, as I mentioned, it can also be used in a custom template.

When you mention Virtue Mart you are moving from a stand-alone shopping cart to an add-on for an already designed site, actually two different animals. Not to say there is anything wrong with VM, but it is not quite the same as the others mentioned.

I will download a copy and play with it, as I like to know what is available. I can see from the start they do not support my merchant account / gateway provider, so that is a concern if I were thinking of using it myself.

The more discussion on all of the free carts, the more it helps somone make a choice. Thanks for making me aware of this one.

Well, I did as I said I would - I installed Joomla and then the Virtue Cart. I must admit I do not know anything about Joomla, and I could never configure it to open with the cart, instead of just the Joomla index page.

But, it really did not matter a lot, since from playing with the Virtue Cart, I could see that it was set up almost exactly like OS Commerce. It did not have all the setup options that OSC and the others do, but basically it had the same fields, the same layout, etc.

So, for someone already using Joomla, it would make sense to give it a try. But for someone just wanting a shopping cart and not being interested in the Joomla package, I would suggest using one of the others mentioned.

I've only tried zen cart so far, has quite a learning curve in customizing the templates, but once you get the hang of it it's quite good, has some useful plugins as well.

Pete,

Thank you for your replies. http://www.melchrisgifts.com certainly looks great. We would definitely look more into Agoracart.
