When you debate what language you should use, just ask yourself what language the internet is written in... head, body, span, table, sound like any language you know? Print, echo, explode, implode.... etc...

Hi ckchin, i would love to use Malay language if only there's more opportunity available for me, though my malay is atrocious. Your message consists of grammer mistakes and redundancies. See below : -

I think sometimes, the tone of english should always be flexible to match the target audience. You won't talk to your white client in malay+english or with your well known friends in bombastic english words would you?

haha, that's an interesting discussion, but as yipguseng mentioned, if the malay is sooo hard to understand then nobody will continue to read it, if locals can't even understand it foreigners will just skip the thread altogether, and if the whole forum was in malay, tough luck to even have foreigners reading this forum, if you want it to be international, then it's best to use english, if you intend to target more to local audience, sure use your BM, Manglish, whatever, hokkien and cantonese as well maybe?

are you sure about that?
since i didn't use many 'short/dialect' in bahasa language, unless the common phase. Most of the malay (newbie /new member) just don't realize their message was hard to understand by others. And i always warning them about their SMS language. And advice them to write in proper and easy for other to understand what's their problem. The typically malay newbie those use SMS message, most of them dont ever know to speak/write in english. So we must reply in bahasa. I saw many of us still using english while reply. Start in english thread = answer in english. start in bahasa = reply in bahasa. Start in chinese language = you reply lah.. i don't know how. If they're really well good writen in English. I dare to say they won't join here.. better they ask anything in Sitepoint.com / digitalpoint.com bla bla bla.. RIGHT? |

haha i'm not saying that you reply in short dialect mysticmind, but I've seen a few posts here that I just find hard to understand and in the end I just skipped their posts altogether, neh, won't be posting in mandarin, too lazy to type chinese characters.

sms language like, this - "X" man, at 1st i really have a really hard to figuring out wat was this until i read it over and over again to find out that it is "tak" or "tidak" this is just an example

We don't understand them because we don't practise using them/seldom use them in our life. If we always use them, no doubt we will understand them. |

actually if it's normal short form might still be understandable, but some are using those 'slanged' malay which we are totally not familiar with, making it quite hard if not impossible to understand.

I too have hard time to understand non-standard Malay, but try my best to guess what it means, as generally we have learned Bahasa in the Baku format in schools.
