ICQ/AIM are so 10 yrs ago.
YM/MSN/Windows Live, 5 yrs ago. they are getting as bloated now just like ICQ back then (since then ICQ has trimmed down, but unfortunately, most have jumped ship by then). And I'm getting too many spams via YM and Yahoo Mail. nowadays, I prefer Skype and Google Chat/Talk. Using Gizmo as well but not many are on it yet, plus it's a bit sluggish. When phones/chat software want to be a many-in-one, they suck. all I need with phones/IM is to communicate well, not to get overloaded information. I can always use web browser on PC/notebook for those other things. Anyway, today, more people seem to use social apps like Friendster (Malaysians are 20% in Friendster, the other 60% in SEA too), and Facebook is gaining ground fast. Most of my real friends are on Facebook, virtual ones on Friendster. For business, I'll stick with LinkedIn Last edited by Cognigens; 10-11-2007 at 05:03 PM. |

To think that just a year ago everyone who was anyone had a Friendster account, it's fairly amazing how quickly the site has fallen from grace. Social networking was all the buzz. Now, however, outside college where sites like thefacebook are picking up some slack, there doesn't seem to be any excitement left. People realized that Friendster had no real relevance for them in their lives. It was fun for a little while to write/receive testimonials and collect friends, but people quickly began to realize that the benefits of Friendster pretty much ended there.
I'll be the first to admit that I was pretty impressed with social networking sites when they first came out. It simply amazed me that it had taken so long for us to recreate our real social networks using the networked architecture of the internet. For the first time we had a way to visualize and understand our social circle. All of a sudden we could see how we were connected to different people. However, after I, got past that initial fun of these sites I really began to realize that there was very little usefulness built in. Other than the ability to post events or messages to a large group (which is easy enough through any number of other ways), sites like Friendster are just not overly useful. They're a good way to show off how many people you know, but other than that I can't think of why I should use them. .... |

From ICQ to Yahoo Messenger and now Windows Live Massager.
I still remember my ICQ # 34784647, but never install after format my PC a few YEARS back. I don't like Skype because can't customize emotion, but use in company. It do have a few hidden emotion, such as (mooning), (finger) if not mistaken |

but skype got much benefits also..
it have: - free voice calls between Skype users - easy multi-person conferencing (up to 50, depending on bandwidth) - multi-platform -- works on Windows, Mac, and Linux - easy file sharing - can have "real" phone numbers in many locations - can also use video (various solutions, Windows only for now) - Skype on your phone -- Microsoft PocketPC has a Skype client, EQO is new and works on Symbian Series 60 and other Java capable phones (client currently requires Windows on desktop) |

sadly.. there's not much user using skype VC.
I'ved try to use it couple month.. but not many friend use it. Another thing is.. not practical during working time. (you can't use headphone + mic), your boss will say "You're fired!".. But chat message always can. (of course some office admin blocked it) I do chat during working time, after finishing my task or asking related people regarding works ie : coding, solving problem etc. So.. YM still the best for me.. (and you can use it to chat with somebody with MSN id too). Friendster and myspace, it both sux, unless you're social type of people. And a bit childish look for me. (most of them teenagers, early teenager = under age one ) And myspace will slow down you connection ie: 1 profile view = 10 video X 1mb = 10mb hahaha.. and the sounds also anonying ..Last edited by mysticmind; 13-11-2007 at 10:21 AM. |

It's worth mentioning that myspace has significant disadvantages and isn't suit for every ppl need. What i dislike here is the advertising is extensive and fairly annoying. And myspace has faced security problems in the past, with the site often running slowly or breaking down temporarily.

mashups & syndications

try facebook (for anything) & linkedin (for business)... some people just prefer them hands down compared to friendster, myspace etc. myspace are for American musicians/celebrities. friendster are for ASEAN and Spanish teenagers. Orkut (now Google's) are for Brazilians and other latinos/South Americans. There a few Chinese-centric ones as well. Facebook started in American colleges, but now pretty much appeal to everyone, everywhere... (growing fastest after introduction of its FB web as a platform - the future for Open Social). Most of my real friends are on Skype (and GTalk) and Facebook/Linked. Plaxo is another good one now that it mashes up everything, but still need to build up loyal users. Other social apps are mostly for entertainment and making new friends. Last edited by Cognigens; 13-11-2007 at 10:33 AM. |
