a question...

Hello there all webmasters! and a very happy christmas!

I am looking for some advice - I am currently learning web desin and was wondering how long it takes to go from having a very basic level of web design knowledge, through to being able to design professional web sites which adhere to web standards?

I realise that this is a difficult question to answer, but if you could give me some indication that would be great. I currently have a very basic knowledge of HTML, I have not yet started learning CSS / XHTML / Javascript or Flash etc etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

There's 2 big option.

1 - If you had lot of money = go to the profesional tutor / take class.
2 - In hand experience = Slow and must has good comitment and focus in everything you do.

As you told, you already had basic knowledge in HTML. That was really a good start.. but that doesnt enough.. Today standard is to code HTML in standard too.. and CSS is a MUST LEARN. Take your time.. focus 1 or 2 hours per day study and mastering HTML + CSS. It wont take to long.. you can master in few week.

After that.. you should go on designing.. then flash.. then jump into programing itself..

To be a professional webmaster.. there's 2 best way.
1 - You're really hardcore doing all of this.
2 - You're really long time in this field.

Anyway.. making money from your site is another story

yep.. you already have a head start by knowing html... but i'm not sure what level of html you are in... if you just using software like frontpage and dreamweawer than i can says you only know 30% of html but if you can handcode a whole html page than you are in very good starting position....

after knowing html handcode.. then as bro mystic said, move to CSS. most of the time css will require lots of amount of handcode to make a site cross browser friendly...

its all about learning and hands on in web site development... to my eperience the best way to learn hands on which you can start a site of your own....

thanks for the suggestions guys - really appreciate the help...

I have looked into some tuition but as you said it s quite expensive (going through a professional) - I was wondering if there are any confident web developers out there (confident in HTML coding, CSS etc) who would be interested in coaching me? We could do a few hours per week whenever is most convenient for you, it would give you some extra cash and be cheaper for me?

Anyone know of anyone who may do this?

Thanks again everyone!
