Hi everyone and anyone! I'm studying in Australia right now and I'm planning to participate in an exchange trip to the US end of this year. Problem is, I need to get a criminal police background check from my home country. Does anyone know how I can get that done without having to fly back to Malaysia? I'm in the middle of my term, you see.... So if anyone has any useful suggestions at all, please help me out here! Thanks!

I don't know about Malaysia, but in the UK you can get your own criminal record report by post. I think you have to send your passport or something. You wouldn't want someone else being able to obtain your criminal record easily, so it might not be straightforward to ask a relative to get it for you.

"iamfreelancer" probably has the best advice - embassy staff are the best people to ask. It can be difficult to get in touch with embassy staff sometimes, so you should ask your local Uni International Liaison officer, or the Uni Vice Chancellor's office to work on your behalf. They should be happy to do that for you - that's what they're for. And they probably play golf with all the right people - so it'll be quicker!

Just ask whoever's organising your exchange, or your department secretary, or your personal / college tutor if the exchange organiser can't help. Someone will know exactly what to do.

I was a non-academic tutor (a voluntary post) at a large UK Uni before I came to Malaysia. The problems students bring are infinitely preferable (even the death threats, panic attacks and court cases!) to never, ever hearing from students and wondering if they even exist... someone who can help will want to.
