Good DSL modems in the market
Hello,
I plan to install Streamyx in my dad's office in August. Is Aztech ADSL 305E the only good modem out there? What about other brands, are there better ones? Thank you. - MENJ |

Hi,
In my opinion, I don't think there is much difference in what ADSL modem you get. Most ADSL modems are them same, most modems provide up to about 8Mbps downstream and about 720-960Kbps upstream. The only difference is the brand, the quality and the look. Aztech ADSL modems are very popular in Malaysia and Singapore (probably because it's the only modem ISP's provide - TM Net and SingNet). The old Aztech ADSL modems don't really have an appealing look, but it's excellent quality wise. The other modem I'v used is the Alcatel SpeedTouch modem. The look of the modem is better than that of the Alcatel (http://www.alcateldsl.com/img/products/st_530.gif). The quality of the modem is also excellent. Both of the modems support PPPoA and PPPoE. The only thing that I would suggest when selecting an ADSL modem is to get a modem with an Ethernet interface. This is because (in my opinion) it works better. I realised that when you try to download a file and use the internet connection (at the same time) using the USB interface, the connection isn't smooth. This is probably because USB is a serial bus and data can only travel in one direction at any one time. With an Ethernet interface, data can travel in both directions and (in my opinion,) the connection is smoother. Another advantage of the Ethernet version is that it is easier to connect the modem to your router for use with your network. |

Thank you, all of you.
I probably follow as suggested and would go for a DSL modem with an internal router, because I plan to eventually have a LAN topology established in my father's office. Currently we have 3 desktop PCs, but they are not connected to each other. What is the estimated price range of a DSL modem, as I am quite unclear on this? Thank you. - MENJ |

The AZTECH DSL305E is a good ADSL modem. By default when this modem ships into Malaysia it is in a bridge mode (purely a modem). But after changing the protocol and encapsulation, it can act as a router plus a modem, which mean you no need to get yourself another router to setup your own LAN network with internet sharing. This is good also for user who are not familiar with the modem's setting. Compare to other brands, you need to do a lot of settings to the modem before you can actually use it. For this model, simply plug in the cable and install the dialer from the CD and you are ready to go online without needing to do any settings. Unless you wish to set the modem as router mode.
This modem has no problem to me so far. As for other brand like ZTE or ARTNET, they are having a lot of problem with their modem's firmware as their modem is using GlobeSpan Chipset. You need to go into the modem page everytime to save the settings before you can actually use it. AZTECH is using Connexant Chipset, a former Rockwell chipset company. This is a good Chipset company and so far their firmware is very stable and good! |
