Well, the easiest way is to ask them (the people who gave you the free domain). Ask them if your allowed to transfer the domain to a different registrar. If they run their own registrar, the answer will probably be no.
But this isn't always the case. The only way to really find out if the domain can be transferred or not is to do a whois lookup 60 days after the domain was registered. If you do it before 60 days, it will probably still say TRANSFER PROHIBITED, because the ICANN guidlines state that a domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or transfer. So after 60 days, do a whois lookup and if you don't see PROHIBITED or REGISTRAR LOCK, then you should be able to transfer the domain. When you're ready to transfer your domain, just ask your local registrar to complete the transfer for you. A confirmation email will be sent to the Admin of the domain. Once confirmed it should take a few hours/days for the transfer. BTW, This is only good if the domain is registered under your name. If they 'contest people' register the domain under their name, you will probably have trouble transferring it, becuase legally it's not your name, it's theres. |

But a word of advise, in my opinion, if they are going to register the domain under their name, meaning that they are the registrant of the domain, you should just forget about the contest. There was once a company, sometime back, that offered free domains, it was free, but after the first year, they started to charge quite steep prices.
It's best just to talk to them, ask them exactly what you're getting, ask them for the full terms and conditions. Only accept the agreement if you're happy with it. If the terms aren't favorable, think long term - it would probably be cheaper to buy the domain now - spend a bit now, but will save you a lot later. |

Does your provider using eNom? It is very easy to push a domain name to another enom account if they want, nowadays you can get a 8.95 reseller account easily.
I think better get the ownership of the domain name if you feel like develop it further.
