Is Linux Really More Secure Than Windows?
Read: http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/sec...le.php/3086051
As some of you might already know, Red Hat 9 is the last of the 'Red Hat Series' as the project has merged with Fedora Linux to make the Red Hat Fedora Project. Besides the Fedora project, Red Hat's other product is Red Hat Enterprise Linux (or RHEL), which is basically the high-end Linux which is to take on Microsoft's new sever operating system Windows Server 2003 (which in my opinion, I think is excellent). Has Red Hat given up on the consumer market? Or is it looking out for its future, focusing on its stronger market - the the corporate market? I've 'tried' Red Hat Linux 9 as a desktop, but don't really like it. If you thought Windows 98 crashes a lot, wait till you see RH Linux (as a desktop). The desktop is nice (I tried Gnome) - I really like the smoothing effect, but I don't think I'll be giving up my Windows desktop for a Linux desktop any time soon. (They say Mandrake is a better linux distribution for desktops, but i've never tried it before - but it should be nearly the same stuff... both run either Gnome or KDE) Another thing I was annoyed with, was the performance (when running the Gnome GUI. Doesn't have a problem running services without the GUI). It makes a 2Ghz system work like a 200Mhz system. If you are really interested in learning Linux/UNIX (operating & managing), learn how to use the command line! Although I wouldn't give up my Windows destop for a Linux desktop, I also wouldn't give up the Linux server for a Windows server ever thought it's an excellent server OS (windows 2003). Hopefully we will get RHEL on our development systems (soon) so I can play around with it... lol. This will probably be the first time we will be paying for Linux... lol Ok... i've blabbered on enough... ----- What are your views on this topic and what are your preferences for operating systems (desktop/server) and why? |
