We had this happen to one of our accounts about two weeks ago. One way to avoid this from happening is to restart the FTP service frequently. If you don't own the server you are hosting on, get your host to setup cron jobs to restart the ftp service. There should not be any side effect's to restarting it since it takes just a few seconds to do it. No connection lost.

Sad to say, according to our logs, it was done by someone here in Malaysia (Jaring account). This is still being investigated until we find the culprit.
