as for my personal favourite, should be phpnuke. coz there's lot of modules that you can find for phpnuke.

to see such community portal you can visit www.mymmu.net - MMU students community portal or www.webnet.com.my . Both are using phpnuke.

if there's any problem, drop an e-mail to me at admin(at)mymmu.net

SuperSLOW loading time..
Bandwith eater.
not friendly with search engine.

After "messing" around with several CMS (mambo, php-nuke, etomite, ezpublish), I come out with Drupal.

I prefer Drupal so much than Mambo, but that is limited to my personal experience.

Drupal site is faster, and I love its search engine URL. Its Taxonomy (category) feature is genius and very easy to use, especially on publishing articles, integrating forum, blog.

Hope this helps

yep, xoops and mombo are better than phpnuke, there has been too many exploits for phpnuke and new ones keep showing up weekly or sometimes even daily. you can test drive xoops and mambo at http://www.opensourcecms.com/

if you only need a simple portal, you can try invision board or phpBB + suitable hacks for example article hack, etc.

I have experience in much of the CMS mentioned.

I have done numbers of site with phpnuke, it's true that there are numbers of disadvantages about it. The only major disadvantages I would like to highlight is the security, other than that, everything is fine. It can has user friendly URL, you can find tonnes of add-on, getting great supports as many people are using it (this may also be the reason for more security issue).

Drupal is really a nice CMS, I can really recommend it, it's strong, powerful, nice security. Just that you might take some times to go through it.

You might also look into e107, a nice CMS with lot's of build in features. More easy for upgrade work.
