your forums got to be active and provide great information in order to attract people to join. ya know, forums of all topics are everywhere nowdays. not easy to compete with those established one.

You will need to advertise the site alot. But before advertising you will be better off if you actually full the forum first so that it doesn't look empty. You could also start of by getting some paid posters.

however, i'm not planning to invest money for advertising or posters.
since i'm creating this site for hobby/fun & also gaining experience on this.
i'm still beginner of web design.

A good idea is to give your forum users an incentive to keep active or maybe to even signup. They pay them for their first 20 posts or something just so that they can get a feel of the forums and they may then keep on posting and using it.

You need to "live,breath,eat and sleep" your website. Your mind have to keep working down the ways to promote your website, and you should make a list down and try to do it everyday, every month, every year, whether it's SEO, or marketing through blog, forum, press release, social media or so on. The internet has become so competitive, and you could not slack anymore

Actually i'm facing the same prob with jzkzlz

and I plan to have some kind of photo competition or any other kind fo competition

prizes wise I might negotiate with some restaurant eg. offer them to advertise in our website but no money involve but just ask them to offer us some kind of cash voucher or discount voucher kind of thing.

I've got a site that has been running well for abt 6 months and still thinking of ways to attract more visitors. For example, 2 weeks ago I stumbled on a few "not-so-competetive" keywords, did some SEO and almost doubled the visitors within a week. There are "opportunities" that we may overlook.
