Help..What do I need for a community site ?

Hello.

I hope i post this in the right thread..

I am planning to build a new site/community builder for my faculty. Theres about +/- 800 to 1000 students (which is just a wild guess..mebbe a bit more then that..).

Whats the site for..
  1. An online community site..
  2. Will post up events..on-going and up-coming..
  3. A gallery so that the students can have their online portfolio or something like that..
  4. A forum for the student to discuss about their studies..thesis..etc..

Heres what i need to know..
  1. Whats the space amount i need ?
  2. Whats the minimum bandwith i need ?
  3. Any other things i need for the site ? lol..i'm still new and so additional info from any of you will surely help me.. ^^

Thank you sooo much !!

hi..thanks for the response..

I'm creating a community site for architecture..i already know my target users and its for my university faculty so i dont think there will be that much of a problem for getting it to be popular.. like i have mentioned above..number of students are around 800 to 1000 plus myself..

the students are aware of this site that i am going to create for them and they are aware of it being a forum as it was asked for and so there is no problem about it being either a blog or forum..there will also be a gallery for them so that they can have their online portfolio or gallery with limited number of photos that can be uploaded..

however..I just want to know the estimated usage of space and bandwith so that we can put aside the community money for the payment of the webhosting and etc.

Thanks

Hello Arcanawar,

If you want to build a community. You can from small
During selecting your hosting package. Do not aim for the largest and the cheapest.

1. Community NEEDS high uptime avaibility. A website which alwasy experience downtime will effected your users interest.

2. Purchase a small hosting then upgrade. Many webhosting allows you to upgrade

Past experience I host Zerotohundred.com (largest car forum in South Asia). They start from :

Free Hosting ---> Small hosting ---> Larger Hosting ---> Dedicated Server ---> High-end Dedicated Server

Thank you,

Hello,

A normal webhosting package could handle normal forum (max users 50 - 70) traffic. It should not have any problem. To start building up your community, you must ensure 2 things.

1. Uptime
2. Speed

These will attract the forumers to post into your forum. If your forum always experience downtime, they will for sure go to other forum. Pick the right hosting.

Thank you,

By the way.. Don't use phpizabi.. The addon modules costs a lot.. I don't know about dolphins though.. it seems pretty stable to use.. Thats the best for a free community script i guess.. If u need the null version just pm me LoL
