Please Recommend Suitable Webhosting in Msia / Spore. Thanks.

Hi. Currently my blog Hanyi.Net is hosted by a very unreliable hosting company in singapore. I am planning to shift my site. I am currently paying around RM380 annually for 1GB storage space and unlimited bandwidth. The rest are quite standard features. If you read my latest blog, you will see the problems i have been facing the last 2 months since i set up my site.

Anyway, can someone suggest a reliable hosting company that offers something similar in terms of storage size, bandwidth and also price? I am really moving my site out ASAP!!!

I did a trace route and found that the server you are hosted on is actually on GNAX. For your information, we have servers in GNAX and we have been monitoring its network uptime since March 2003. Believe it or not that it has been 100% up until now?

To me, I suspected that the hosting account you are on now does not know how to manage their server. That is the main reason why your site is down.

Just my advice to you. You should expect such service level at RM380/year for 1GB Diskspace. Perhaps you should increase your budget this time to avoid any undesired circumstances.

Reliable companies don't just charge you with excessively expensive prices. They have their reasons. One good example is, hiring a good server admin to maintain server reliability is not cheap at all.

Dear Michael,

A million thanks for the prompt response. Hehe .. actually I am delighted to know that the server my blog was hosted was up 100% because frankly, I have encountered:

1. Downtime of at least once a week. (which i accept to be normal. so, i have no complaint)

2. My whole website completely disappeared. Yep, all my files, data, scripts, everything including the cpanel, and all. My blogs, forums, photo albums all disappeared 4 times within 2 months!!!

Can someone who is experienced and and expert in webhosting shed some light or enlighten on how this could actually happen or what happenned?!!!

And all 4 times they managed to "restore" my WHOLE site after I informed them that the site has "disappeared"!!!

Hehe, I am at a total lost to grasp what had actually happened!!! And in fact, I think they also donno.

Yep, maybe what Michael said is true. The server is ok ... it is the person manning the server that is having some problem.

Anyway, maybe I should consider increasing my budget as mentioned by Michael. Maybe we actually get what we pay for isn't it?

Dear hanyi,
There are many factors that cause a server to be unreliable. As said earlier, the main reason is because the server admin is not performing well. Another reason can also be the server hardware problem. Hardware break down is unavoidable but it isn't frequent.

One more thing is software wise. It is related to the server admin. If the server admin is not alert on the security holes by not updating himself frequently, the server will have lots of exploits and thus, it can be hacked easily or even some processes ran by the user on server will cause downtime.

Furthermore, overloaded servers can cause downtime as well. A hosting provider that attracts customer by selling hosting plan at very low price (also overselling) will need to load the server with a large amount of clients to cover the server expenses. Crowded servers will take up more server resources and even the most powerful server on earth will be pushed up to its limit.

Last but not least, downtime can even caused by the user as well. Web scripts that were coded improperly can be server resource intensive and thus, bringing the server down.

I hope my above explaination can give you a clearer view before making a final conclusion by saying any particular hosting provider is not reliable.

I would recommend you increase your budget(if you required that BIG package) and go for KKHost.net. This guy is very experienced and helpful.

I also recommend you take a look at UltraUnix.net. Get their US server and state that you do not want a overselling server. The one I am hosted is reliable. Their customer service also good.
