windows hosting and linux hosting?

Hi,

Newbie question.. could any kind soul please tell me what is the difference between windows hosting and linux hosting? I've browsed through ipxcess's site and noticed almost everything is same, except that linux hosting has gallery and windows hosting doesn't.

what exactly is the difference between the two? which would be better performance wise? please advise.

ps: I've sent a mail about my query to ipxcess and received no reply until now. I'm considering looking for a more responsive hosting provider.

Hi hunter,
Linux server runs on Apache while Windows on IIS.

Basically Windows server has a plus point by able to support ASP & ASP.Net programmed script. Furthermore, it supports not only mySQL database but also MS Access, ODBC & msSQL databases.

The downside of a Windows server is it isn't as stable as Linux server because it consumes more system resources than a Linux server.

Linux server on the other hand is more than sufficient if you just have a static HTML web site, dynamic website of PHP + mySQL or Perl/CGI.

edit: Some Windows server support CFML (Coldfusion) but it'll be more expensive and normally they sell it as a value added service.

hmm..maybe u can try out "exabytes" for a better responsive hosting provider. there are other hosting provider in malaysia as well.

thanks for the prompt reply guys, it really did help a lot. i guess i'll just go for linux server then, since the site is just static HTML.

one more query, i noticed that some hosting services has gallery included. Does this mean i can easily set up a photo gallery (the kinds where users can easily post without hassle/html knowledge)? does the hosting services play a part here, or are there any other options i can set up a photo gallery? any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

the reason i'm opting for linux server previously is also because it has gallery while the windows server doesn't at ipxcess. but now i guess it doesn't matter much anymore, i'm looking into exabytes as suggested by start searcher earlier.

btw, is exabytes local? their rates are in usd.

Yes, most cPanel servers with Fantastico installed will allow you to install popular scripts (for your case, gallery) easily by just navigating into your account control panel and follow the instructions.

Furthermore, when there is a new release for the script, you can update your installed script easily with Fantastico without learning the programming language.

I would suggest you to look for cPanel + Fantastico or Directadmin + Installtron for Linux Hosting since you are not experienced in the programming language, to save all your hassles.
