Google Aps for Your Domain. A sneak peak from Google of a web hosting industrykiller.

Go to https://www.google.com/a/ if you haven't know about it.

Google Aps allow you to create private label email (by Gmail), IM, Calendar and (most importantly) Google Page Creator on your domain name. And Google will host that all ...for...erm, free.

Meaning, if Google starts pushing this service and promote it...well, I guess the web hosting industry will take the biggest blow ever. Because (in my humblest opinions:

1) Nothing beats free. Yeah, the web hosts might be mumbling how personal services are important, yada yada. But people wants it free if it's reliable. And you can't get wrong hosting with Google, right?

2) It's Google. Come'on, the biggest and coolest internet company. You really can't get wrong hosting your site with them, can you?

3) Google Page Creator rocks! Well, at least for beginners. If you haven't try it, rush to http://pages.google.com/ . It's really easy and intuitive interface. Beat the hell out of any fancy site builder in current market if you ask me.

I will be very afraid if I'm a web host now What's your thought?

Is this same with google.com/hosted? I test 1 domain name with them and another 1 with domains.live.com last month.

I believe it is the same.

Does Google mention how many DBs will be included in the hosting service? How many POP3 Email Accounts can you create? What is the technical support response time provided by them?

I believe nothing comes totally free. I sense that there is a premium price tag for additional services like extra IPs, SSL installation... etc

Thanks.

When I signup I key in 20 email (is not instant activate, they are manually approve), but I heard that it can be up to 400 email address. 2GB for each mailbox, is gmail actually. Just add Custom MX records will do, not sure about extra IPs, SSL.

Any idea what databases will be supported and how many databases will be given?

Will POP3 be supported?

Thanks.

Everything is still early to say. That's why I added the word "sneak peak" in the title of this post.

First, everything is still in BETA. And Google is choosing which organization is their beta tester. So means not anyone can signup and get approved.

Secondly, the pages are created under Google Pages Creator. Meaning, I'm not even sure there's a FTP account for you to upload your files. And it only can create static pages, hence there's no database or whatsoever.

So actually, google still doesn't want any part of the web hosting industry cake yet.

There are many free hosting out there that even provide POP3, mySQL databases... etc.

There's still a reason why many opt for paid hosting

I just wish to get more details from you since you created the topic

Thanks for sharing!

It's more to Email hosting described.. Google Sites only allows web based uploads... Technically it's hard to beat googles hosted email services (i'm doing a private beta test of 65GB google hosted email) .. Speed, Performance, GMail look and feel and extraordinary Anti-Spam engine is so accurate. They are planning for per hosted emails site encryption algorithm which is still under in house testing..

Small companies who have less than 50 employee or email account it's more than enough to use google hosted email. Needless to say POP3 and secure SMTP access is available at convenience.
