Question How to get manufacturers and companies to advertise on your website?

i'm building an information portal on Malaysian adventure activities and the outdoor industries. i'm planning to project it as the one stop info center where adventure travellers from overseas can research our adventure related destinations and facilities... also at the same time for local adventure enthusiasts to get info on gears, equipments, destinations and outdoor expeditions..

so how do i get outdoor equipment manufacturers to:
1. pay me money to advertise their brand/products on my website
2. send products for us to test and review on our website

do i need to send invitations? do i have to present a business plan regarding the website? is there any specific or tried and tested way to do this?

for my opinion, all new business must have "GIVE AND TAKE" thinking,

you may not hope for take before give.

DO it free for people, give ur self a limit, 1st 100K list are free, 1st 100K produck review free, so that you have enough infor to attract visitor.

Once your website famous enough, people will asking u to post their product, review them, and will paid you.

not to give you cold water here, but it is hard to do this~ mean you have to contribute your time a lot, energy too without any cent earn.

other then this, you need to promote and advertise your website, COST you a lot here.

For this directory idea, I have thousand of idea in my mind, but non of it can do it smooth without ur 1st pail of GOLD... Except your father are uncle LIM or you are TOTO's boss's son.

Yup.. its a vey hard thing to do.. but still not impossible..

You'll need to a lot of good contents first.. Then from there, ask some help from your friends or relative who own a business or product. Do a review for them first to build your portfolio.

Mind you, this process do require a lot of patience..

thanks for all the input so far... i agree with all of you.. in fact i am already working on putting up contents, thanks to cooperation from the members of the outdoor community. product reviews are also already in the work....

what i really need to know is: after I've posted enough contents, and gathered enough audience, how do i contact those parties .....

- Google
- Yellow Pages (Online and offline)
- Go their site and looks for contact person/focal point
- Email/Call/Fax them personally

No shortcut dude.. U have to do it yr way coz no one is going to share their contact list for you.. Make sense eh?

Visitor is the most important fact, once u have a lot of visitor, advertiser will find you instead of you find them.

eg. if you look for a job now, which website 1st appear in ur mind?

i may suggest you find few partner to work out for the content building. advertiser may be ur partner too.

Ok, considering you have enough relevant traffic, you can locate them through many ways. Get your list as suggested by awiekupo. Once you know your target, qualify them according to your assumption. For those less significant one, just e-mail or fax your brochures.

Call the big companies, find out who's in-charge of marketing and make an appointment. Prepare your Sales Kit for the meeting.

Your sales kit should contain:

Info about your company/website
-mission, vision blah blah blah
-provide some background...

Data about your web traffic(google analytic stuffs)
-tell them where they come from
-what do they want, what they're looking for (run polls and questionnaire in your site now, you gonna need it)

Your price-kit
-Contains your ads space pricing according to location, size and duration
-Info on any special discounts or package

Bring a laptop and do a powerpoint presentation. Let them think first and call back about a week later to check. That's the standard I think in advertising industry..any other suggestions are most welcomed..

just what i wanted to know!... okay, will work on the contents, in fact we are already talking to several active members to get more content straight from the audience.. and trying to work out some kind of alliance with other related websites.. once our site is launched, we'll monitor the traffic and follow the rest of your advice. thanks!

for this kind of biz, you definately go for a combination of offline and online advetising to get your manufacturer... they best way is to give them a solid reason why they want to pay you to review their product? Reason like how much exposure you can get for them? how much traffic you have on your web? how do you advertise your web?

like the rest says, built up your website content and traffic first.... then buy a business directory/manufacturer directory (like ffm directory book) and start inviting them ... ohh... like any other biz... there's no shortcut to it...
