I have a website related to Excel software already getting good traffic. But after I checked a few keywords, I found that I did not optimize for some keywords that are searched quite a lot and my site ranked badly for those keywords:

Searched in Google: ~ 1440 times/mth
Results: 1.4 million pages
My results rank: No. 9 of Page 10

free excel spreadsheet
Searched in Google: ~ 6800 times/mth
Results: 1.5 million pages
My results rank: No.10 of Page 17

After optimization of the contents, title, description and H1 tags. Here are the results after about 1 week:

free excel spreadsheet --- No.4 of Page 4

Just to share with everyone here, optimization can get results in very short time... target the keywords that are searched a lot by web surfers.

anyway, even without this SEO issue it's a good coding practice actually. It's about doing things right....
wonder what's the case if a page has a lot of H1, H2, H3 tags (you know those lazy and sloppy cosmetic hack)...

how do we find out how many times certain keywords were searched in certain search engine in a month?

i normally use overture suggestion tools (Keyword Selector Tool) for result in yahoo search.

for google, i use Adword tools (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) . However google didn't state the exact number of in the result but display it in a bar. This give you some indication on which one is popular.

But since Overture has been taken over by Yahoo (called Yahoo Search Marketing), the link above may not work properly.

I do not use the free service from Overture anyway as it only provide keywords and the number of searches in a month. I use other software tool to get the number of searches/results, keywords Adsense price, number of Google campaigns as well .... so that I can also build contents to "attract" high-price Adsense ads.

Basically there are 2 types of keywords list I use:
1. Keywords for SEO (ranking and get traffic) --- Keywords with low R/S and high KEI
2. Keywords for adsense (attract high-paying ads) .. with real content pages of course, not valueless MFA pages. --- Keywords with high CPC
