Hi all,

I am purely beginner at SEO and currently my 2 weeks old page has 0 PR. I read a lot about how to increase PR through backlinks. Can someone kindly explain what exactly this means? Right now I didn't link to any of websites on the internet, just internal linking between my pages. Does it mean I have to include links to similar website in my site or I need to exchange links with others (my link on theirs, their links on mine)?

PR, which stands for Page Rank, is an algorithm that Google use measuring the site from the scale 0-10 . Most people believe the more backlinks (people from other sites linking back to your website), the higher PR, which is not quite true nowadays. Authority backlinks (link from high PR (above 6) site or government or edu site) have more impact, 1 authority link can most of the time, better than 1000 lowend backlinks.

I can go hours writing about his, but for now, a solid advice: For a new site like yours, don't rush off doing link building campaign. Else, Google will thought you will try to manipulate the search engine result and put you under sandbox.

Thanks a lot limcs. I guess I'll be concentrating more on updating and managing content since I got quite a decent traffic right now. (just hit 1121 uniques yesterday! hopefully today can beat yesterday's record)

1121 uniques, that's great for a new site. Are all the traffics come from social bookmarking services ? (I've got plenty of that for my site as well).

Eventhough you said you are a beginner in SEO, but I think you are really good at blogging and web publishing stuff. The ad placement on your site is great (with those image) and I'm sure you achieve some fairly good CTR. Looking forward to see you participate more here (although it seemed quite dead now, lol), and perhaps share a tips or two ?

oh, no la you make me sound like a season pro already. actually part of my traffic came from my old geocities page (geocities.com/squarehippies) which i did a few years ago but back then i didn't know anything about adsense or seo for that matter. i got accepted to dmoz lising pretty fast that time and soon many search engines got my site listed. my page did get top 5 in the google search results but i didn't know how valuable that can get to a page. being a free hosted service, the bandwidth limit is 4MB per hour (imagine!) and the site is unavailable almost every hour.

only about recently i gained back interest in web design and discovered adsense (i'm from design background so the site is not quite technically enhanced i must say i use javascript for commments LOL retro i know ) what i did was i redirected every page in the geocities site to my new domain. also i am quite active in few celebrities forum and put some shameless advertising in my signature (it's really quite catchy i guess since we're allowed to use images as our sig) so a large percentage came from those as well.

errr... about my CTR right, they're not doing so good actually. it hovers around 1-1.5% which got me about average USD2 perday. on a really good day i can get up to USD6 but that only came twice so far. i guess it's due to the nature of my site which is image heavy and it's quite hard to make the ads blend into the content. besides, there's too many ads on world cup these days which i guess quite stale among my visitors . currently i'm working hard to gain returning visits which is healthily increasing although not as many in numbers compared to first time uniques.

limcs, care to explain a bit what is social bookmarking service? i have no idea what that is...

Social bookmarking is a Web 2.0 services where you get to see what most of the people are surfing (and bookmarking). Basically, you get to know what a 'public taste' like. I somehow has trouble explaining it though (I'm still a bit blur since I slept at 5am just now), but here's few example of these:

To get on the daily popularity page, you will need around 20-40 'votes' from your visitors. Once you're on, your site will experienced hundreds and thousands of visitors all of the sudden (which we called it, the 'digg' effect).

digg is awesome. If you do get it on the frontpage, make sure your webhost are aware. the traffic is huge and last for approx 2.5 days.

That is fantastic site to begin with 1000 over uniques. Just give your self some time before Google finally able to PR you. And try not to go against any AdSense policies. By disclosing your CTR, I think you are against it already. So, better avoid it before your account is suspended.

What limcs mentioned is right. Links from a PR 0 website to yours will not do you any good. Get some high PR website to link back to yours.

And you need good SEO to ensure proper keywords will bring you more traffic.

Search engines rank websites in their results base in terms of popularity and quality backlinks helps for that, search engines like natural links built slowly overtime, you should start getting quality backlinks from high PR of relevant sites.

Just an update, my site finally got its PR3 early last month. And now the uniques are doubled since most of the site's images got indexed in Google Image search, making up for 50% of incoming traffic. Thanks for all the advice guys!

hi squarehippies and lim cs,now i wondering how to get high pr,now mine is 0 .....my friend ramani,is a blogspot hacker,he didn't do anything but now his in pr4....i ask him how he did it and he say he just got 200+ backlink to his blog make him in pr4.I just use blogspot for blog the accumulate my adsense earning.I have for my check next month then i wanna buy my domain name.But how can i improve my pr?did i need to spend some money?help please!!

It's always adviseable to get backlinks from high PR websites. From my personal experience..when I was getting backlinks by submitting link to lower PR sites, it actually decreased my PR. Then, after that, when I submitted my link to high PR websites, my website's PR finally improved.
