Fuzz and Semantic Search - Make it your Friend
The low-down on this topic is that major search engines, especially Google are now using semantic and fuzzy searching excessively. Search for mugs and you will find sites about cups, despite them being totally different!
Here are some absolute gold-dust tips which you can use to greatly enhance your SEO performance: 1) Reverse engineer the fuzzy and semantic searches Search for your top search term in Google and then go through the SERPS, 100 at a time, looking for every word highlighted in bold. Most highlighted search terms are your search term - some aren't but are related words. Finding these words is really valuable - you can then mix them with your text, cementing your reputation as a site which covers the whole spectrum as well as looking much more natural. For example, you can now double your keyword density without penalty - bring both keywords up to their maximum density and let Google combine them at a later stage to make you massively more relevant. 2) Buy PPC on those related terms Adwords has had broad-matching for ages, however, over 2006 it seems to have got even more broad-matched. The great thing is that you pay minimum bids based upon the word you type, not the word you show for. That means you can find a little-searched for term which Google considers the same as your main search term - leave broad-matching on - and get in paying a few cents instead of a few dollars. Write them down or bookmark the thread because otherwise when you get your next big cheque you won't remember who to thank!
