I think most people start up by using blogger/blogspot, and more people still using it as it is the easiest, cheapest ( $0 fee) of all, as a hosted solution.

I find blogs hard to maintain with things like "ping", "trackback" and such so the answer is no, I prefer a site's News system instead.

Oh. I actually think you might be missing out here. "Pinging" enables you to notify the aggregators and get your both visitors and search engine bots to crawl your blog (when you have new post, of course). "Trackback" enables you to automatically get links from others blog when quoting their article ( nofollow link, btw, but good to get visitors). They are the bread and butter of blogging, I think.
