Smile

So glad you started this thread genzy,

Was about to find out if anyone here in webmastermalaysia.com used Linux as their main desktop for everyday website development tasks. And if they do, would be great if you could share a bit about what software and how you go about stuff.

I generally use Windows XP for all my work. All graphical, visual, animations are done on the desktop itself. But programming, and html editing are all done on server side (linux server) where I ssh in to edit the files directly without the bothersome upload/download.

No worries. Open source UNIX variants - Linux/BSD have various widely global support channel - Forums, Documentations, Articles, IRC etc. Very easy to find out. It is just a matter of "trials and errors".

Linux doesn't require hardcore knowledge and, just require click here and there using the UI desktop (like Windows). For the console part, it is similar to the Windows console, e.g. ls (UNIX) => dir (Win/DOS).

Noob?... So was I a long long time ago.... actually linux is not really that hard to learn or at least get a feel of.... if you're interested to try new stuff... the best way to play around with linux is either have a spare PC (no need canggih graphics/processor) or a virtual machine/vmware... and some curiosity + spare time.

there are also "LIVE CD's" out there which let's you try linux just by booting straight from the CDrom and not touching a single file on your hard disc... i still recommend installing on a separate PC, but if you dont' have one.. live CDs are probably a good way to go.

Try browsing around Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu if you wanna check linux out... ubuntu is one of the more popular distro/distributions (version/edition) of linux out there.

** damn... genzy's reply was faster... maybe i'm too long winded... **

Linux Live CD is the best way to learn Linux without worrying about installing the big Linux OS (the size depending on your installation options) using VM Ware as the virtual OS OR partitioning your hard disk that requires formatting.

No extra spaces are required.
Just CD ROM drive is required.

- Just put the Live CD into the CD ROM drive.
- Boot the PC.
- All is automatic.
- The sleek graphical desktop automatically appears in front of you.
- Just click here and there to play around.

Get free Linux Live CD, i.e. Ubuntu at
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

Ubuntu is available free of charge and we can send you CDs of the latest version (7.04) with no extra cost, but the delivery may take up to ten weeks,
I requested the free Ubuntu CDs before. After weeks, dozens of Ubuntu CD were sent to my home from (I forget where) South Africa or USA.
