as long as its an opt-in then its ok... this mean the recipient voluntary give their email address to you to via online form or others media to send them the newsletter...
if you buy the email addr and/or enter the email addr on your own ... its still considered a spam to me anyway... |

Our email service actually detect by IP address, mean if the sender IP address are blacklisted, it will goes in to spam section in our email.
Few week back i meet a sales person who sell email marketing, according to that fella, they have few IP which did not get black listed, and while send 1000 over news letter to the client with their server IP, it won goes in to spam... According to that fella, there are few associate which collect all the spam IP address, some thing like spam dictionary/spam directory service, and all our email service obtain all the spam list from those associate. so called filtering... this is what i get from that "sales" fella, dono he bluff me or not... ![]()

Iamfreelancer, as u said as long as the visitors subscribe for newsletter by their own, but however, the mail server like hotmail, those are still categorize it as spam/junk mail as the user never add our email address in their contact list.
So, if there's necessery for sending out newsletter as you're doing online sales to your valued customers, which way will u do to avoid it categorize as spam? Cause when up numbers of letter u've sent and all mail server like hotmail, msn or aol..they will detect the source and blacklisted. Once blacklisted, it's actually blacklisting your hosting's provider's mail server. How to solve this problem? hash

According to George Duncan in his book Direct Marketing, Streetwise, a junkmail or spam is a message, including offer, sent to the wrong person.
The key concept here is the 'right message' to the 'wrong person'. Even though you have a good offer, if it is sent to the wrong person, it will irritate them and consider you as a spammer. Newsletter is the trend since yesteryears, but you should have a credible mailing list to support that. Allowing people to subscribe to your newsletters, to qualify for special offer, to log in for greater access or to view special content on your website is always a good way to get one. So now the main cornerstone is to get relevant traffic to your website. Reciprocal links exchange with other websites in your similar interest can do just that. By promoting your website, you can increase the chances of the right people giving you their e-mails, therefore reducing the chances of your newsletters considered as spam. Good luck! ![]() |

the wrong thing is..
Most of newsletter nowadays 'PROMOTING REFERAL LINK' too much.. : local's worse! well.. and i hate it.. since at the first place, i submit to newsletter is for some good write up or infromation.. 9/10 newsletter just promoting 'new referal link'.. no wonder it might be counted as SPAM. ![]() Last edited by mysticmind; 30-10-2007 at 08:55 AM. |

yeah.. even some of them very popular among others..
so disapointed.. imagine, I submit couple bunch of so called 'marketing guru'. guess what.. 5 of them email me with the same affiliate link!.. Another worst thing is.. IF THERE IS NO NEW AFFILIATE LINK.. SORRY!.. none of them sending you a good write up and tips, weekly, mothly, yearly.. They just appear when there's 'new referal link' indeed... |

If it a good newsletter, no one gonna hit the "report spam" button. ![]() Make a newsletter that people will appreciate it. It's ok for me if they don't send email at all or.. once or twice per year. But every month / every week with "download here your free copy now" (referral link there!), that was hell annoying. It wasn't wrong for them to make money on it.. But just the way they threat their subscribers as "I only need you to be my income source - oh! please click my referral link!". But there's still many good newsletter outside there.. A good example of newsletter i found that impress me and (maybe suitable only for me) is Sitepoint.com newsletter. Yes, they do sometime giving 'exclusive' (?) offer, but most of the time, their given tips, latest coding tips, designing tips etc and many many many good writeup that worth to read.. but again.. most of them just 'need you to click their referral link'! Hahaha! I still stand on that. ![]() |

I totally agree with mysticmind on the referral links annoyance, but I shall make it clear that I was mentioning the usage of reciprocal links in my earlier post, not referral links.
Referral links are when another domain publishes a hyperlink, usually with an advertising description/graphic, to your site (or in your email). Reciprocal links, on the other hand, are when two, or more, sites agree to publish referral links to each other. -definition from leveltendesign-dot-com It's true that newsletter now tends to deliver ads, not news. The most probable solution is to focus more on giving valuable news to the right people. If you have valuable news, then the issue is getting the right people. When you exchange links with related websites, the probability to attract the right people to sign up for your newsletter is higher. You reduce the chances of annoyed receivers and minimize the odds of your emails be labeled as spam. ![]() |

The way i define it is as below: SPAM = If they send email to me without me asking for it. JUNK = When an opted in email/newsletter contains rubbish contents and nothing of my interest. if you want to start a newsletter, 1st make sure its a op-in and allow op-out, 2nd make sure your content is what the recipient wanted and not full of promo or junk stuff. 3rd don't blast newsletter every single day coz ppl get annoyed with daily news... |
