Font CSS not rendering

I have had this problem always, that CSS of font style doesn't really render at all. I am quite pissed off many times as I couldn't find any documentation about that.

so say:
body { font: arial small;]

but my output always a Times New Roman instead, no matter it is in Firefox or IE. SOmeone are to explain and help? thank you so much.

w3c valid mean.. all code standardized.. so can view all browser compatible.. ok.. forget bout old IE

that code might be works on IE and FF.. but not in opera (mostly used by MAC )..
so.. even it doesnt matter.. and nobody really care.. but that's your own coding standard lah..
