Question from a beginner - 25-01-2008, 12:32 PM

Hi every otai here I am a beginner of this field

Can anyone tell me...
What is the necessary skill needed to become a freelance web designer? Graphic design + HTML + CSS is enough? if not enough, what knowledge is a must / strongly recommended to learn?

And may I know generally the reasonable price for 1 page / project is how much?

If you encounter some client says 'I promise you I will pay RMXXX if your design is used', will you accept this job?

To become a freelance web designer, if you think u're able to do it, then u're able to do it, it's not bout the matter of skills, but is confidence. If u think u nid to learn more, then learn more. But, whenever u become a web designer, u will automatically improve urself by learning more coding as requested from your customers. By force if wanna recommend u, using php if u nid to do multiple complex website, if your customer jz nid a introduction, explanation nice surface website, your skills now are enough (Graphic + HTML + CSS).

The rates are depending on your own, there's no exactly standard price, actually what's the price not that important, the importance 1 is how good you can give to ur customer. what i mean is ur qualification. If you're good, u charge RM 250 per pages, ppl still will look for u, but usually as a freelancer won't charge that high, So i can say ..the cheaper the possible as a freelance. Why? People look for freelance because wan spend less.

Although I don't really understand what do u mean by the " " sentences. But whenever any clients make me a promise or I get myself any clients, i will surely ask them to sign a simple "contract" with the terms and conditions that you would like to apply.

That's all I can say...

Good Luck

i think the best way is to create a profile first..
buat sample beberapa website utk kwn2 atau persendirian.. the purpose is to show-off!..
jadi bila dah ada profil, senang nak tunjuk kpd bakal client/customer ttg bakat dan kreativiti anda sebagai web designer..
basic knowledge must be Graphic design + HTML + CSS but i will added something like PHP and Java, sbb kehendak client nie berbagai..
ok selamat mencuba

Agree with amarDaniel, but instead of using Show off, I will say it as a portfolio for u to promote your qualification to your customer. But recently I found some hardness to become a freelance especially to big company although you're better than a website design company. Sick of this, lot of website company have stolen my project just because they're registered company.

maybe study the deeper roles of design in today's society. form, space, harmony, colors and all that. as well as the psychology of satisfaction. just my 2 cent.

how they steal my project?

just like the company deals with me and submit the project for me. Deposit paid.

Then those website companies know the company wan someone to build website, then they use their marketing ways, show off their previous portfolio and purposely show off those "big companies" which were their customers, then talk lot craps n let ppl think they're professional. Then, of coz company will trust on them more than a freelancer.

So rather forfeit the deposit and pass the project to those company. this is wat i meant "stole"
