Question Table? Css?

I am wondering...
When should we use TABLE and when should we use CSS for website template(layout)?

Recently, many website(especially weblog) start to be 100% table free. Is TABLE that bad?

AFAIK, CSS layout will give a more tiny and structure look in coding. Using CSS is faster than TABLE(?).

However, some people(browser) have problem with CSS design webpage. Example: one of my friend complaint that the CSS block covered the content in my weblog (http://www.LiewCF.com/wp). For me, the layout is no problem.

Sometimes when I visit some TABLE free website, some of the content also blocked by CSS layer...

Actually, what are the reasons to choose CSS instead of TABLE? Or, on the other hand, why use TABLE instead of CSS?

When should we use which one?

I am not a web designer, hope to get some guidelines from design gurus here.

do you mean using CSS completely without using TABLE ?
Reasons?

How to solve that some browsers that are not compatible?
How to write a cross browser CSS?

2.1.3.4 CSS - Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a mechanism for changing the appearance of HTML or XML elements, by assigning styles to element types, self-defined classes of elements or individual instances.

Stylesheets can be used to consistently define the appearance of an entire site. Following the introduction of CSS, the W3C recommended that layout-specific features in HTML be phased out and replaced by stylesheets, creating a simpler and more structural World Wide Web.
http://www.webstandards.org/learn/faq/#p2134

Basically, as I said in another topic, HTML will be phased out and will one day be replace by XML.

It's more of personal preference I think.

My opinion:
An advange to CSS would probably be less code - less overheads - slightly faster loading sites...
A disadvantage to CSS... not 'fully' supported by older browsers and tables can have more 'detail'.

How to solve that some browsers that are not compatible?
Get a new browser =)

How to write a cross browser CSS?
There are work arounds to address certain browser issues. You can find quite a few resources on the net about it.

Yes. This is a problem. But CSS2 is a fairly new technology. The first public working draft of CSS2 was released in November 1997 and became a W3C recommendation the following year. 6 years isn't a long period of time - this technology is still growing. The first draft of CSS2.1 came out in 2002, but has yet to be recommended by W3C.

If I'm not mistaken, CCS2 is only fully supported by the latest browsers (IE6, Mozilla 1.2+). Browsers such as IE5, 5.5 only have partial support for CSS2.

To make your css site accessible by as many (very modern) browsers, ensure that your CSS is valid.

Then there's CSS1. Most modern browsers (including IE5,5.5) fully support CSS1. What you might want to do is review the changes of CSS2.

CSS2 Specs: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/

checked my site stats, there are high percentage of my site visitors still using OLD browsers.

Instead of printing "best view with latest browser" at every footer, I think I will combine CSS and table for the moment.

btw, somehow, I feel fainted to understand CSS positioning(CSS-P)...

CSS-P? kind of ~pening masa mula2 baca

My reference - HTML Utopia: Designing Without Tables Using CSS... pinjam dr my best friend :P

my advise... use table tag but try to to implement some CSS, yup... CSS loads faster but your site may 'collapse/runtuh/ranap/berterabur' if using 100% CSS, especially CSS2 - try at your own risk
