100% or fixed width

Which are you prefer for either forum or website? If fixed size then is 800 or 1024? Do you think if the page size set to 100% is much more difficult to design compare to fixed size?

If you wanna do a fixed-size design, i think it would be a good idea to check the visitors statistic and see what resolution the majority is using.

If you use % you have to do extra work to make sure that it wont look super ugly (too streched out) for those using very high resolution.

it depends on your website's purpose and design actually, but for me i would prefer fixed size rather then liquid coz if liquid, u would end up like wat phantomic said, extra work and super ugly layout may come out if high res screen.

using fixed width would be better. most people nowdays use 1024 res instead of 800 but hence, many websites is still using 800 res.
using % width is harder to code and would become too empty when user using hi-res setting, super ugly if someone using more than 1024 res.

I like to use about 750px fixed with and then put additional advertising and links in right-hand-columns which can't be seen by those with smaller resolutions. Nothing important - but it adds to the page if you have a larger screen.

yes, a centered 750pixel page is an ideal design.

most of my site stats recorded "the most resolution used" now were 1024 X 768

so I assume, 800 X 600 is out of date. Im thinking now to redesign my site capable with 1024pxl res. The maximum best fit width is about 960px.

So!.. if you're still using 800pxl res. It's a time to change your monitor..

erm.. what about yours? what about your site most used resolution?

I think these days everyone is designing for 1024x768 anyway. Maybe I do not notice because my sites are all in fluid CSS

from the chart.. 800 X 600 is REALLY SMALL percentage.. because..
the Red, yellow, cyan, magenta etc is higher resolution than 1024!..

let do some research here

No.. it's really small amount.
Unless you didn't want to add another BIGGEST RESOLUTION ie :
8percent of 1280 X 800, 7percent of 1280 X 1240 and so on.
I wont ignore the 80percent here.

It's really hard for me to find 800 X 600 nowaday.. even in Lowyat, i cant find easyly 14" monitor. You may found it only in Used or bargain computer shop.

Even in Cyber Cafe, they wont use 14" anymore. It's the end day of 800 X 600 and 14" monitor.

Let see ho small this thread view in my 19inch monitor.

Even with larger screens many people prefer 800x600 - especially elderly people and those having trouble reading. Another important thing to remember is that with large screens (19 inch+) very few people maximise their browser - they use a smaller window but have more of them.

yeah, thats right.
I rarely maximize my browser. Instead open a few windows to view more things altogether.
