well, first of all,
CGI(common gateway interface) is NOT a language.
PHP is a script language.
I will say that PHP is something similar to ASP, but PHP is open source.

both cgi and php are ways for your web server to generate output to it's client...

both are commonly used to generate what we call 'dynamic' web pages as opposed to 'static web pages'

php is a modern language and is quickly adopting the object-oriented standard while cgi programming is usually done with either C or perl (though it supports countless other programming languages)

if you want to start somewhere i would say go with either php or asp (and not asp.net which is a little more complicated). you might want to ignore cgi all together as it's quickly becoming obsolete (usually only legacy systems use it).

wow! that's cheap!

NVM... after you know PHP, ASP is easy. Learn CGI will give you some benefit as well. It is still used in most of the websites.

if i am not mistaken, PHP is using CGI if there is no mod_php under Apache. Just like perl if it not using any mod_perl.

scripting language -> CGI -> your web browser.

or to make things faster : scripting language -> server_module -> your web browser.
