    Which software to use?

What is the best database software for developing a database consists of informations from several faculties? The database is to be accessed by the public. I've seach a few software online including MySQL and Oracle yet I still don't know what the difference is. What is the best platform to use it on to provide stability and realibility? And also the cost. I'm new on this thing. Thank you.

Is this database for a new system, or is it for an existing system where you would like to implement a new database?

    lcf..
    thanks for the url..

    hftey..
the database will not only be used within the institutes or university.. the public may have access to it.. i dunno about the browser and stuff because i'm asking on behalf of a friend.. actually it's a database about plants, herbs and products that kinda stuff.. so i guess there must be loads of data right.. i'll be grateful if u can provide the pros n cons of each software n platform coz i'm doing a survey..

    sufyan..
emm.. let's just say it's for an existing system.. how about on a Pentium 3 1ghz pc with 256mb ram running windows xp? but u could always provide an additional info about working on a new system

do correct me if i'm wrong somewhere.. thanks guys..

I am sure there are many expert here would like to add or comment on this...... I am sure you can rule Oracle out. Not that it is not good but it is probably out of your budget and your application looks relatively simple.

Still i guess it all comes down with what the developer most comfortable with. Both "linux, php, mysql" and "windows, access/mssql, asp" can do the task nicely and quite cheaply. You still can use "windows, php, mysql" without any problem. So just check on the developer what he/she comfortable with and what system you have then go from there.

u mean hack the website or database?
website security is very much depends on the programmer and the system admin.

hmm.. new Windows version need to wait until they release Service Pack up to SP2 then only consider safe to use.

Windows XP SP2 is coming. Better security, MS claimed. Some old softwares may not work with SP2
