you need to have a lot of links coming in and going out of your website.

when the search engines see that many related websites link to you, they will know that you are rather popular, so they will list you higher in the search engines.

this is called 'link popularity'.

but to be frank there are over 50 sites linking to me outthere but they might not be listed in the search engine that's why u only see 5 in the list.

bittorrent sites come and go everyday, cos some has some piracy issueand was forced to shut down..

you can not just link to any website... you need to link to HIGH QUALITY and RELATED websites.

it is not necessarily the NUMBER of websites that you link to or are linking to you... it is also THE QUALITY of the websites that you link to or are linked to you.

contrary to what some people in this forum are saying... Alexa's ranking does NOT depend on downloading their toolbar.

even the biggest companies like eBay, Microsoft etc use Alexa to gauge important info like.. the traffic rank of a website, the gyration of the graph, when traffic started to pick up, when it went down ( this makes them detect WHY it went up or down ) and a lot of other info.

do not get fooled to think Alexa is not a good resource.

do you think Amazon would be willing to pay millions for a company creating cheat software?

i dont think so.

even though it may not be 100% accurate ( btw, in this world, what IS 100% accurate anyway? ) ... it is currently referred to by the best professional online.

looking at the popularity of the search on 'bit torrent' in http://inventory.overture.com and the low ratio vs the high demand in nichebot.... i would say the traffic to your website is rather viable.

btw, do u mean alexa is accurate? i know it's kinda hard to measure something when u cant even insert a code on the site.
but i still thinnk their way of listing it is somehow correct but jus the figure isn't correct.

what i mean is let's say Site A havig mroe visitors than mine when i visit alexa to check, indeed his rank is higher. but those stats isn't convincing enough to be true.
but it's a good start to know ur competitors.

there is an ever going debate in almost every major internet marketing forum regarding this issue

to me, it is not worth debating up to the minutest of details

as webmasters, we need info all the time.

to gauge traffic, the majority of webmasters all over the world still use alexa no matter what they think about its accuracy

until there is another tool developed to gauge the net's traffic... many webmasters still use alexa.

i myself know it's not 100% accurate, but can i find another resource to find a more accurate measurement?

for the time being.. the answer is no... at least not yet.

so i use alexa as a GENERAL understanding of the net's traffic... not SPECIFIC AND DETAILED... GENERAL.

to really know more info about the traffic that goes into your website, install good site statistics scripts...

once in a while, check alexa...

when you know that your site statistics show a drop... you can check alexa and see if alexa is also accurate in detecting a drop.

finally what i would want to add is... alexa just tells you about your traffic.

our job as webmasters need to do these things repetitively :

1- add more relevant CONTENT in your website. more and more relevant content is important to rank high in the seacrh engines.

2- keep on searching for sites to LINK with

3- have a NEWSLETTER... keep updating info in your newsletter. in general, sites with newsletters are visited more frequently compared to sites without newsletters.

4- keep on finding out what type of info visitors want, and give it to them

all these will certainly push up your search engine rankings.

which one does affect more?

both are important.

use value exchange by sitesell... they have a good guide on linking.

it is also important if they link you on pages that have a high PR.

if they put you on a page with a low PR, that would not help traffic much.

in exchange, you should also link to high PR websites too.
