Anyone know where should I upload .htaccess file? Why this file disappear after I upload? Please help. Thank you.

do you know how to convert dynamic link to search engine friendly link? such as http://www.domain.com/browse.php?cat=1 I write it as below, but seen like not work. .htaccess rewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^browse/(.*).html$ browse.php?cat=$1 What else should I do?
